Learning Value

Kindergarten through 8th grade has been learning that VALUE is the lightness and darkness of a color.  Some classes have been working on creating different values with watercolors while others have been using tempera paints and different mediums to create different values of a color.

Below is one class creating different values of a single color:

7th/8th Grade - Buildings in 2 Point Perspective with Shading

The 7th and 8th graders designed a building or house using 2 point perspective.  Once students drew their houses/buildings, students were required to use shading skills in their art work.

6th Grade - Watercolor Landscapes in Perspective

6th graders have been learning atmospheric perspective as it pertains to art, specifically with using watercolors.  Notice in the artwork the hills in the distance and the fading/duller color in the background.

4th Grade - Bierstadt in Perspective

4th Graders made a watercolor wash in either warm or cool colors.  Using black and white paint, students layered their trees by creating varying shades of gray to show atmospheric perspective in their paintings.

1st Grade - Renoir Inspired Autumn Tree Reflection

Inspired by Renoir's Autumn Tree painting (see "Artist of the Month" picture), 1st graders drew trees and then painted fall leaves using paints.  Students folded their papers in half (hot dog style) and pressed to transfer paint on the opposite side.  After students were done with the tree leaves, students painted the water using watered-down tempera paint.  Adding the background along our horizon line put the finishing touches on our last project for the month of October.

5th Grade - Gustav Klimt Inspired Tree of Life

5th Graders painted Klimt-inspired trees.  Class discussion focused on symmetry, positive/negative space and pattern as it applies in art.  Discussion also focused on where in the Bible the Tree of Life is mentioned.  Students copied one of the following verses around their tree:
Proverbs 11:30 -
"The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and the one who is wise saves lives."
Revelation 2:7 -
"Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God."
Revelation 22:14 -
“Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city."
