Pre-K Still Life

Pre-K drew their still-life of a bowl of fruit using oil pastels.  Every year I am amazed at what five and six year olds can draw.  These are just beautiful! 

2nd Grade - Shaded Pumpkins

Students have been learning about our artist of the month, Caravaggio, a master of shadowing!  Throughout the month, attention was focused on the shadows we see everyday and how the presence of light creates those shadows.  Students began to understand how the contrast between light and dartk (the resulting shadows) creates the perception of depth in two dimensional art.

In 2nd grade, students drew pumpkins and colored them, using shading, as though they were directly facing the light source.  Notice the true pumpkin colors are only represented on the surface areas farthest from the center.  Just look at the results...STUNNING!

3rd Grade - Analogous Flowers!

The 3rd Graders have been studying Georgia O'Keeffe.  O'Keeffe is famous for her large, close-up flower paintings.  For this project, students drew a large, zoomed in flower.  Students colored their flower using their selected analogous colors.  After coloring, students cut out and pasted their flower onto black paper and cut out leaves to add the finishing touch.

Kindergarten's Pumpkin Patch Paintings

Kindergarten worked on creating their own painted pumpkins by using only the primary colors.  Students worked hard mixing their RED and YELLOW paint to get orange.  During this class, students made a great observation - you need more yellow than red to make a true hue of orange!

Step 2 - Students went outside and gathered leaves to make a crayon leaf rubbing using only a Yellow and BLUE crayon!  Children cut out their pumpkins and leaves and pasted them onto black paper.  The finishing touches of a horizon line and moon/stars were added.

Didn't they do an awesome job!

  

Shading with the 2nd & 3rd Graders

In both classes, shading a drawn object using their pencils helps give objects realism.  This is a crucial skill in learning to draw realistically. 

 

 

 

1st Graders - Tissue Paper Leaves

Students worked on their autumn leaves using tissue paper and overlapping their colors to create new colors.  Once students are done creating their leaves, they will work on their own version of Renoir's Autumn Tree's landscape.
